Rules & Guidelines

ENTRY DATES & DEADLINES

  • Call for Entries – March 16, 2018
  • Entry Deadline – April 6, 2018

ELIGIBILITY 

Entries must have been produced between January 1, 2017 – December 31, 2017

ENTRY DETAILS & FORMAT

Entries will only be accepted in digital format. The Pinnacle Awards Program is organized by the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association and is open to individuals, businesses, organizations or other entities located in the Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia region.

The Northeast Tennessee region is defined as the counties of Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington in Tennessee, and the Southwest Virginia region is defined as the counties of Lee, Scott, Washington, and Wise. The program is open to all Northeast Tennessee Tourism members and non-members. Our members receive special discount entry fees.

  • Font size for any written text must not be smaller than 11pt.
  • Each entry form submitted must be completed in its entirety in order for items to be judged eligible.
  • Entry must be submitted online by Friday, April 6.
  • Judges will not refer to items in other categories, nor will they transfer items already judged in other categories (the number of entries must equal the number of categories entered).
  • A separate entry form must be submitted for each entry (copy as necessary).

SPECIAL NOTES

If all entries in a category do not meet the award criteria, then an award will not be given in that category. Each category will be broken down into two sections pending upon budget for a specific entry.

Each entry will be judged individually and awards will be based on judge placement. Only one Pinnacle Award will be given in each category. Awards will be presented at the Pinnacle Awards luncheon on May 10, 2018.

WHO CAN APPLY?

  • Entry is open to DMOs, Attractions, Festivals, and Hotels
  • Marketing agencies can nominate a tourism client’s project

COST

Members:

  • 1-3 Entries: $25/entry
  • 4+ Entries: $15/entry

Non-Members:

  • 1-3 Entries: $40/entry
  • 4+ Entries: $30/entry

PAYMENT 

Payment in full must be received with entries for entries to be deemed eligible.

Festival/Event Awards

Best Event/Festival of the Year

Submit your nomination for a Northeast Tennessee festival or event that you feel deserves this award.  The festival or event should have a positive economic and social impact on the local community, promote to out of town and regional visitors, and have a proven track record of success. Finally, the festival/event that receives this award has to showcase new activities and initiatives that took place in 2017, and show how those events impacted the overall Festival.

  • Does the event have a positive impact on the community/region?

  • Does this festival/event have a proven track record of success?
  • Did this festival/event showcase new activities and/or initiatives in 2017?
  • Is the marketing message clear?
  • Is the event creative and / or unique?
  • What is the overall impression?
  • Does the entry match the purpose / mission for the event?

Best New Event

Submit your nomination for a new event in Northeast Tennessee region that you feel deserves this award.  The festival or event’s first year had to take place in 2017. The festival or event should draw visitors to the region, be unique, and offer an out-of-area promotion/marketing.

Attraction of the Year

Attraction of the Year
  • Category 1 Annual operating budget less than $100,000
  • Category 2 Annual operating budget more than $100,000

This award provides an opportunity to recognize an attraction that has made a significant achievement through new marketing effort, special exhibit, or community event.

The Attraction of the Year Award will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Does the attraction have a positive impact on the community/region?
  • Does the attraction draw visitors from outside the community?
  • Did this attraction showcase new activities and/or initiatives in 2017?
  • Is the marketing message clear?
  • Are the attraction marketing materials creative and/or unique?
  • What is the overall impression?
  • Have all requirements been met?

Marketing & PR Awards

Best Marketing Campaign
  • Category 1 Annual advertising/marketing budget less than $50,000
  • Category 2 Annual advertising/marketing budget more than $50,000

This award honors the best use of an all-around marketing campaign by an organization.  Campaigns have to show research, creativity, demographic targets and strategy, nominations should have an explanation of how program was implemented and its level of success.

Special Note:  If a category has less than three nominees within it, that category will fold into the next category above or below it.

ENTRY INFORMATION:

In 1,000 words or less, please provide the following:

  • Describe the marketing campaign
  • Describe how the campaign achieved its goals
  • What impact did it have on the market (nominations must include qualitative and quantitative data to support claims of success)?
  • What advertising and marketing initiatives were used to promote campaign?

Judging Criteria:

The Best Marketing Campaign Award will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Did the marketing campaign have quality design, concept, execution, and materials?
  • How effective were the materials, manpower, resources, and budget used?
  • Was the marketing message of the campaign clear?
  • What is the overall impression?
Best Adventure Tourism Award

This award recognizes ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that foster environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation. This award is presented to the business or organization that has demonstrated a commitment to the development, delivery and promotion of a creative, exciting outdoor tourism experience that is designed for activity enthusiasts, and which showcases and promotes Northeast Tennessee’s incredible outdoors.

ENTRY INFORMATION:

In 1,000 words or less, please describe the program you are nominating, detailing how it promoted and impacted sustainable tourism.

Judging Criteria:

The Best Adventure Tourism Award will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Does the adventure tourism initiative demonstrate excitement and creativity?
  • Does the adventure tourism initiative draw visitors from outside the community?
  • Does the adventure tourism initiative showcase a commitment to growth and sustainability of the product/experience?

This category features the region’s best design and creative

  • Is the item creative and unique?
  • Is the item designed / laid out well?

Best Public Relations Campaign

This award honors a public relations campaign or event that helped promote tourism in the Northeast Tennessee region.

Entry Information:

In a 1,000 words or less, please provide a summary of the public relations campaign, including the goals, objectives, and results.  Also, highlight how this campaign impacted the region/community.

Judging Criteria:

The Best Public Relations Campaign Award will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Did the public relations campaign have quality design, concept, and a strategic execution?
  • Was the public relations message of the campaign clear?
  • What is the overall impression?
  • Did the campaign generate media and visitor awareness?

Partnership Award

Partnership Award

This award will honor a tourism partner that has impacted a tourism organization and the Northeast Tennessee tourism industry.

Entry Information:

In 1,000 words or less describe a partner that has positively impacted your business and tourism in the Northeast Tennessee region in 2017. Partners can include a DMO, Attraction, Hotel, Marketing Agency, Vendor, etc. If partnership has been in place for more than two (2) years, please highlight how the partners support in 2017 was different and made an impact more than in previous years.

Judging Criteria

The Tourism Partner of the Year will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Does the tourism partner show an exceptional commitment to the Northeast Tennessee tourism industry?
  • Has the tourism partner significantly enhanced and perpetuated the Northeast Tennessee tourism industry?
  • Did the partnership have on the market or event?
  • What is the overall impression?

Industry Leadership Awards

Rising Star Award

This award recognizes a young professional (30 years old or younger) in the tourism industry in the Northeast Tennessee region.  Nominations will be evaluated on leadership, enthusiasm for the industry, successful projects, events, and other performance-related accomplishments. Employers, supervisors or colleagues may nominate individuals.

ENTRY INFORMATION:

For each of the awards listed below, please write 1,000 words or less describing your reasons for this nomination. Please include the nominee’s community involvement, business history, and most noteworthy accomplishments.   For Rising Star Award, please include nominee’s date of birth.

Judging Criteria

The Industry Leadership Awards will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Does the nominee exemplify outstanding leadership in the Northeast Tennessee region?
  • Has the nominee helped advanced the tourism industry in the Northeast Tennessee region?
  • What is the overall impression?
  • Have all requirements been met?

Please note the nominee must have served in the Northeast Tennessee tourism industry for a minimum of two years.

Tourism Leader of the Year

This award recognizes an individual who best exemplifies outstanding leadership in the pursuit of excellence and who has advanced the tourism industry. The winning nominee will have dedicated more than 10 years to tourism and nominations may include contributions over an entire career or for a recent, notable single accomplishment. Please detail how this leader positively impacted tourism for the Northeast Tennessee region in 2017.

Hospitality Frontline Employee of the Year Award

This award will recognize outstanding performance from a frontline employee in 2017.  Employee must have been employed for at least one (1) year.  Nominee can work for a hotel, attraction, restaurant, or specialty retail shop that interacts with visitors to the region.

Hospitality Leadership Award

This award is to recognize a leader within the hotel industry in Northeast Tennessee.  General Managers, Director of Sales, Food and Beverage Directors, Catering Managers, and other key leadership positions can be nominated.  The award will be given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding contributions in leadership, service, and community civic affairs.  The nominees are judged on performance that exceeds normal job responsibilities and contribute outstanding service to the business community, customers/guests and to the community.

This award is presented to an individual that has demonstrated a significant commitment to the tourism industry in Northeast Tennessee, and in return has made an economic and community impact.
